On February 29, the European Commission took a major step towards creating a European Digital Identity (eID) with the publication of a legislative proposal. This initiative aims to make it easier for European citizens to access online services, both public and private.

On March 7, the ARF (Architecture and Reference Framework 1.3) and the EUDI Wallet Reference Implementation were published, which defines the development framework for European digital identity wallets.

What is the European Digital Identity?

The eID will be a secure digital wallet that will allow European citizens to store and manage their personal data securely. This data can be used to:

  • Identify themselves online
  • Access public services such as tax returns or passport applications
  • Sign electronic documents

What are the benefits of the European Digital Identity?

The eID offers a number of benefits for European citizens, including:

  • Increased security: The eID will be protected by the strictest security standards, which will help to protect citizens' personal data from theft and fraud.
  • Greater convenience: The eID will allow citizens to access a wide range of online services with a single username and password.
  • Increased efficiency: The eID will reduce the need to present physical documents in person, which will save citizens time and money.

How can I get the European Digital Identity?

The eID will be issued by the EU Member States. Citizens will be able to apply for it through a simple and secure process.

When will the European Digital Identity be available?

The European Commission's legislative proposal still needs to be debated and approved by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. The eID is expected to be available to European citizens from 2024 onwards.

What does the European Digital Identity mean for the future of Europe?

The eID is an important step towards creating a European single digital market. It will allow European citizens to access a wider range of online services more securely and conveniently. The eID will also help to boost the European digital economy and create new jobs.
